Rosé FAQs: The Must-Knows

Rosé wine stands apart from red and white wines due to its unique production methods, which allow it to capture some characteristics of both, while maintaining its own distinct identity. The choice of grape varieties and fermentation techniques used to produce rosé wine contribute to its refreshing, light, and versatile nature. This diversity makes rosé a fantastic option for multiple occasions and a variety palates, bridging the gap between the richness and depth of red wines and the crisp, refreshing qualities of white wines

The type of grapes used to make rosé wine can vary significantly depending on the region, winemaking tradition, and style of the wine. Red grape varieties like Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Malbec, Pinot Noir, and Tempranillo are the primary choices, each contributing unique characteristics to the resulting rosé.

Rosé wine is produced in largely the same way as red wine, but the key difference is that the red grapes are soaked with their skins for a much shorter period than for producing red wine. The grapes may be soaked in this way for as little as 2 hours, or up to 20 to create a wine that’s pink rather than red.

Depending on the blend of grapes, rosé wines can be either sweet or dry wines with a fruity flavour profile. You can expect to find notes of strawberry, citrus, apricot, raspberry, cherry, and melon.

To fully appreciate their fruity flavours, rosé wines are best enjoyed chilled, plus it makes them more refreshing. Pop your rosé wine in the fridge for an hour or two before serving it in your favourite wine glass.

The best food pairings for rosé wine all depend on if you opt for a dry or sweet wine. For instance, light and dry rosés, like those from Provence, are characterised by their delicate fruit flavours, crisp acidity, and pale colour. These wines pair well with lighter, fresher dishes, such as seafood and salads. Meanwhile, full-bodied rosés, such as those made from Mourvèdre or Tempranillo, have a deeper colour and more intense flavours, often with notes of dark berries and spices. These rosé wines pair well with heartier dishes, such as chicken, pasta or aged cheeses.

When you buy rosé wine online, make sure you lay it on its side as soon as it arrives at your home. By keeping the liquid in contact with the cork, this prevents the cork from drying out and shrinking, which can let oxygen and even bacteria into the bottle, spoiling the wine.

Store your rosé wine in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Once opened, keep your bottle refrigerated, so you can continue to enjoy a refreshing drink long after that first glass

Once opened, keep the bottle sealed with a bottle stopper and drink your rosé wine within 3-5 days. If the wine begins to smell sour or vinegary, discard it.

You can buy rosé wine with 0.5% ABV in our low alcohol collection, perfect for when you want to keep a clear head. Alternatively, Bottega 0 Rosé Sparkling Wine is a great 0% rosé, bursting with the luscious taste of berries; it's the ideal way to celebrate a special occasion.
