 If you've never heard of the Mint Julep, you need to get yourself over to the American south to experience this classic concoction. Thousands of juleps are poured at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby, but any time is right for a sweet sip of bourbon with fresh mint. Don't forget the bouquet of mint, which provides an essential aromatic pleasure as you sip.

Usually crafted with Bourbon whiskey, though it is not unusual to find the drink made with rum. Since massive amounts of sugarcane grew over in the South, and many liked to make their Mint Juleps with rum, which was widely available in states such as Louisiana. So whether you like your cocktail with bourbon or rum, try this classic drink recipe.

Method

    1. In a Julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint leaves in the simple syrup.
    2. Add the bourbon then pack the glass tightly with crushed ice.
    3. Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside.
    4. Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome, and garnish with a mint sprig.
